Studying the perceptions and needs of active and prospective teachers – a qualitative survey
Author: Katharina Felbermayr
Year of publication: 2024
The OeNB teacher survey deals with the needs and expectations of (prospective) teachers of geography and economic education with regard to supportive offers on the subject of financial literacy. The research interest also includes the understanding of financial literacy and the self-efficacy of teachers in teaching economic content. For answering the research questions, we used a mixed-methods design (combining qualitative and quantitative methods). For the qualitative part of the OeNB teacher survey three focus groups were conducted in Vienna and Tyrol with (prospective) teachers. The surveys were carried out in autumn 2022 and spring 2023, which needs to be taken into account when interpreting the results (e.g. the introduction of the new curriculum for geography and economic education in the school year 2023/24). In summary, the teachers want a "good" textbook for their economic lessons, materials with short lesson sequences, workshops for students with external experts on specific financial topics, and practical training courses for teachers. Economic content should be taught in a target group-oriented manner and in reference to the individual needs of the students. Depending on the complexity of the teaching content, this can be a particular challenge and is seen by the teachers as a "tightrope walk".
